Merengő dressing table

- Diploma project -

In designing my masterpiece, my aim was to create a piece of furniture that would be connected to the past by reviving the tradition of ornamentation, and that would be made human through the details of the craftsmanship - thus creating a long-term preservation and perpetuation of the furniture. I chose the dressing table as the object of my design because I was struck by the personality of the furniture and the everyday ritual of facial grooming at the table. In the ‘Merengő’ (~brooding) dressing table, realized in the workshops of the university, handcrafted ceramic details meet mass-producible oak construction. The furniture's geometric ornamentation is related to femininity: water as a female symbol appears in the lines of the dressing table.

Thesis

My thesis was concerned with the process that led from our traditionally richly decorated, handcrafted object culture to the optimised, ornament-free objects of today. The legitimacy of craftsmanship was called into question by the industrial revolution, and from this point I trace the changes in the meaning and perception of ornamentation and craftsmanship up to modernism. Through the analysis of furniture examples, I contrast the different ways of thinking about typification and craftsmanship, artistic expression and functionality by different designers and movements.
